what domain to have as main domain

i am upgrading hosting with my hosting company. the main domain name i was using for my hosting was not really an active site. all my active sites (i have 5-6) were under it Ė since many many years.

now i will have new hosting plan and i can choose a new main domain.

should i choose the website that is my main active website and the other sites should be under it? or i can choose any other domain that i own, as main domain, even if it is not a acitve site, (as before), and it doesnt matter? can you think of advantages or disadvantages to both options? as far as speed, security or other?

So, to recapitulate: you had a domain, say example.com, and you had different websites on sub domains (e. g. site1.example.com) or in subdirectories (e. g. example.com/site2), but the main domain wasn’t actually used for a specific website, and now you are going to give every site a specific domain?

It doesn’t really matter which site gets which domain, I’d say it depends on whether the subject of a site matches the domain name the closest. There are no disadvantages regarding speed and security, the only thing you need to keep in mind is search engine ranking; if you change URIs you need to let search engines know (by setting up proper 301 redirects).

    no . no sub dmains...

i had domain1 as main domain which i didnt use at all. it was just the main domain... under that, there were folders for my active sites for domain 2, domain 3, domain 4 etc.. my main site was domain 4 for example... now sincce i will change hosting plan, i can assign new domain as main domain.... is it advantageous or not to assign another inactive domain like domain 1 as main domain and keep everything same, or, assign domain 4 (the most active) as main, and then put all others under it, that is the question
