View Full Version : Forcing download of mp3 instead of browser play?

Hi, I've been getting some complaints from people who want to download my mp3s rather than listen to them in the browser. Is it possible to force the browser to save the file instead of playing it in a browser window? I don't want to compress it.

If you dont want to do something server side, why not just put up links to the file?
Tell the user to right click the link and select "Save Link As..."

Yeah, it's just that for some people that doesn't work for some reason. I don't know if it is because they're too ignorant to understand how to do, or if there's some feature lacking in their browser, but they say they can't make it work. And writing "right click and choose save as" on the page will only cover a small percentage of browsers, as most have different wording for the same action, and those who didn't know how to do before will only be left even more confused.

It would also save me some bandwidth, since they would click once and then have the file on their computer, instead of first listening to it perhaps and then click the link again to save it, or similar...

But I don't even know, maybe it isn't even possible? Or maybe PHP is required, I don't really know.

Compress the file with the *.zip extension. Then they have no choice but to download it if they wish to interact with the contained file(s).
