View Full Version : Windows explorer closes when encounters folders with a "virus" in its filename

This one has been bothering me for the past 3 months. After I have installed win xp and whenever I try opening folders with virus in its filename, the explorer automatically closes. Moreover, I can not even install any antivirus program, because after 1 second the installation is instantly aborted and windows terminates the program.
I have searched for the web and at microsoft help online but can't seem to find any clue about this mystery.
Can you please tell me what is happening in my computer?

Install a viri scanner by going into Windows Safe Mode With networking...

You do have a virus... heck i would say just reformat!

You've definatly got a bit of malware on there since any installation of Antivirus applications is being terminated. Boot into safe mode and try to install one. Also run the stinger from http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/. This detects some of the most widespread and common viruses around but not all.

Thanks to you guys  .

However, I am still clueless how this thing could happen when all that I have done was to install my OS. I have also scanned my installation disk (the antivirus program I bought) for an updated virus check no virus was found at all.
Does it mean my winxp cd has a virus in it?

If you are installing an illegal WinXp then yes it might... or if you are installing a windows xp SP1 or lower within 5 seconds of it being on the network it will have a virus on it. You need to install it from behind a Hardware firewall inorder for it to work. Err... correctly install without any viruses.
