View Full Version : Best free editor

Way back when I started coding php, I used notepad, then I got jobs in the real world that all used dreamweaver for everything, and I guess now I got a little spoilt, dreamweaver, apart from having nice site management features (search all files in site is my fave), colours in all my keywords and functions nicely and has a great feature that when you put in a function it pops up the parameter list so you know what order to put them in (I know its a little bit training wheels, but theres only so much information one head can hold and asp does a lot in different orders).
But now I've got a new job and the only things I've got on the computer are front page and c++ builder 5, which is what my predecessor used. So can anyone recommend a good, free editor, mostly for php, if it does others thats a bonus.

Perhaps you can find one here (http://www.php-editors.com/).
In the top right of that page you can search for all free php editors. I've used SciTe before. Its decent but it doesn't have tooltips like DW does. PHP Designer 2005 looks promising. I think the 2006 version might be out.

First thing to do is uninstall frontpage :D

Then ask your boss to purchase DW. You could get 2004 or 2004 MX cheap as v8 is now available.

There are many text editors with syntax editing available these days. I don't use them I have DW.
I have used Notepad2 and cPad.

If using ASP then check out Visual Studio Express. It's free.

Eclipse with the PHPEclipse plugin is quite nice, it syntax highlighting and function/variable auto-completion.
It's not exactly lightweight though, can be quite memory intensive

Ever looked into Scite and Crimson editor? They are both powerful, fully featured text editors :)

If you're coding PHP professionally then I think you should have something like Zend PHP Studio which is a full professional PHP IDE. Of course this isn't free however.
