View Full Version : Image Map Links

So I'm not entirely new to all this but it's been a while and I'm trying to do something a little beyond what I've done before. Anyways I searched the site for anything related and didn't see anything, so if this is a repeat just point me along.

Here's the deal. I'm working on a shopping cart system (ZenCart) the site I'm building is for personalized stationery. There are a bunch of options that customers can choose to personalize. Ie: head size shape, body size, etc. Basically pick the stickman that looks like you.

The manufacturer has a coding system where each character or attribute is assigned a code. Ie: Little boy with baseball cap head is B4.

There's also an image that has a list of all these attributes. When the customer is filling out their personal information, ie: character names, address, etc, they can click on a link which opens a new window with the master Image.

What I'm trying to do is create an image map in this new window so that the customer can click on the desired head and the corresponding code will be inserted into the referring page in a text box.

Ok so I haven't found a great way to describe this yet, but hopefully someone can see what I'm getting at.

Maybe this will help. Imagine what's below is the image map.

1 2 3 4 5

What I need is on clicking say 'R2' that the popup window closes and inserts 'R2' into a text field.

Based on what I know about HTML I think this should certainly be possible, if also quite toilsome. Perhaps though this is a server side operation...?

Anyways thanks for any advice,

Certainly IS possible, what server-side language can you use on this project?

All you would really have to do is append a querystring value on the link so it passed a value to the next page, wherein you would parse the querystring and display the info accordingly.

hi pixelEngine,

It's an Apache server running PHP Version: 4.3.10 (Zend: 1.3.0).

Any idea where I might find an online guide or resource that might explain querystring value etc?

any advice here is good since i'm a little lost
