Ive been fluttering on and off with xhtml and css for ages now i find it pretty easy to grasp. The problem im having is trying to drum it all into my head so i can remember it now im not sure if this is the right way to go about things but i just want to get to a point where i dont/rarely have to refer back to a book or tutorial.

What im wondering is how do you remember what you've learnt? Do you just refer back to a book not seeing a reason too remember it all, maybe you just keep making lots of websites using a book for reference knowing that after a while it would become second nature.

Also please could you give me tips on how i should go about learning and remembering it so i dont have to refer back to a book all the time?

Download a CSS cheatsheet and post it next to your computer. Basically I have found that by trying to trouble-shoot my code and others' I rarely ever have trouble remembering something and if I do it is Google.

I suggest just keep building different pages and experiment with different layouts for practice, that way you'll soon remember the different properties etc.
