What the heck is a hotspot?

A part of an image which is basically a link. You set the co-ordinates of where the hotspot is.

You mean something like this (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/sprites/)? Or maybe setting a background image to a UL and using links inside of the li's.

drop down menus using CSS - use embedded ul's

<ul id="menu">
<li> yadda </li>
<li><ul id="sub1">
<li> yadda </li>
<li> yadda </li>
<li> yadda </li></ul>
<li><ul id="sub2">
<li> yadda </li>
<li> yadda </li>
<li> yadda </li></ul>

then set the background to any of these elements easily...
