View Full Version : need help creating a basic online booking system

I have only been learning javascript for a few months now as part of a MM course I'm doing. I have been asked by a friend to help him create an online booking system.

He basically wants users to fill in a form which he wants to notify him via e-mail of the users details but also update a calendar so users can see when a holiday house is available or has been booked. We haven't even started to learn forms yet but I want to do this as a long term real life project.

If I could get some general advice on what would be needed to be done to acheive this goal and any links to possible examples of sites that use this and code I would appreciate it.

Also how does he go about setting up credit card facilities on his site so people can pay online.

You can only do half of what you want to do. You can have the form return all the information to an email address (don't think you even need JS to do this), but JavsScript cannot read/write to files. This means that any data you want to store cannot be stored as there's no way to store it.

For what you want to do, you will need to use a serverside language (my favourite is PHP) and then use this to do everything that you want i.e. Send the email and save the data.

Have a look at this post (http://www.codingforums.com/showpost.php?p=167434&postcount=4) (you may want to have a look at the posts above it to put it into context) for more information. There are plenty of tutorials around on how to do the things you're looking for, so try google too

Hope that points you in the right direction

Thanks for your advice.

Sounds like it's way to advanced for me at this stage.
