I think it was window.statusbar.visible=false right?

You can not hide the status bar without opening a pop up window.

But I'm pretty sure I read this in a book,with the statusbar.visible prop...oh well I guess it's an IE6 feature no?
Also there IS a way:
var IE=new ActiveXObject("InternetExplorer.Application");
But the problem is this code opens a new IE instance...I want to handle the current IE instance...anybody has any ideas?

That is fine if you do not want a cross browser script. What are you trying to hide in the status bar? You can just hide the text if that is what you are trying to do. I do not think 10px is alot of room to work with.

Changing the "chrome" of an existing window isn't possible except for locally viewed web pages. If the page was viewed via the http protocol you must open a new browser instance to change the "chrome".

As of SP2 users of XP will have the ability to override any hiding of the status bar and that override will be turned on by default. I'd guess that the next SP for W2K will also make the same changes so this is a "feature" you can no longer count on.

From the preliminary MS document on the changes
Internet Explorer has been modified to not turn off the status bar for any windows. The status bar is always visible for all Internet Explorer windows.

You can get the whole document at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=20969 it details a number of changes to IE that are in process which will also fix a great many of it's security flaws.

If you are doing this to have the effect of your users not being able to see the URLs of links they mouseover or something like that, there are several of scripts on DynamicDrive.com to change the text in the status bar. Just make one that always says "Done" and your visitors will probably not know the difference.
Also, there is another script on dynamic drive that will cause URLs of links the visitor mouses over to be hidden from the status bar
