I though there was some really good advice in this post:

Like oracleguy said, it's not about the syntax (language), it's about getting the concepts.

In my day, there were fewer options. PC technology was relatively new, so in some ways it was easier to begin and easier to grow with the changes.

These days the changes come in groups and one on top of another but the underlying concepts, after you drill down past the all abstractions, still hold true.

Learn the basic concepts, pick any language, stick with it until it's second nature, then learn another one. The second one will be easier because it's just a new syntax, you'll already know the concepts.

The language of the moment will depend on the environment you're interested in at the time: desktop app? website development? mobile app? 3D shooter? CAD automation? Embedded firmware?

The possibilities are many, You have to learn the discipline associated with your interest as well as the language best suited to dealing with it, but that's the draw, you can choose to indulge yourself in anything that interests you.
