View Full Version : Suggestions for improving the look of select listboxes?

An intranet site I've been working on is getting demo'd next week and I'm pretty proud of its functionality. It looks pretty good too but the biggest eyesore are the listboxes.

The navigation column on the left of the page has 3 large listboxes, each one housing between a dozen and several hundred options related to employees, meeting rooms, etc. For that sort of directory functionality a listbox is pretty much the only way to go.

The annoying part is that listboxes haven't really changed in 20 years. I sure wish IE supported listbox background images but since it doesn't I'm left with changing the border or changing the background color.

I don't know if you've played with that but a listbox looks just as cheap with a mono blue, red, or purple background as it does with white :p Does anyone know some code for livening it up? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you can't style a "listbox", or, not much more beyond what you've stated. But if I was met with a list of several hundred options I would immediately shun the site and never go anywhere near it ever again.
Being that your showing this next week I doubt you have time to change anything but I would suggest a menu layout to pages that have related options. I can guarantee whoever you're showing it to is going to have the same qualms about it as I do. Not that the list doesn't look pretty, but how ridiculously over sized it is.
Personally I would never go over maybe a dozen options in a select. It even bugs me when sites make you select your date of birth using dropdowns.
