View Full Version : Should I start designing for larger screen sizes?

It's a questions we've been throwing around. Our analytics are showing a higher amount of widescreen moniters but we have stuck with the 1024x768 rule.

I wanted to see other opinions as well on the matter.

It's hard at times to judge, being on a 24inch iMac sometimes sites can look awkward finished, then again a smaller percentage of people will see it that way.

Just looking for some new opinions or points of view.

Thank you

I would try to satisfy most of your users > 90%. So if you get >90% for 1024x768 and it drops to 80% if you bump that up a bit, I would stick with 1024.

The other option is to make the website expand with the size of the window, and set a minimal width, that way people with bigger screens get more information horizontally. The hard part is how to organize the information to auto expand.

Another option still, similar to the previous, would be to use javascript and swap out elements when the width of the window is wider, though that requires some work.
