View Full Version : I need someone to replicate youtube, minus the video hosting.

Basically, I'd like someone to replicate youtube for me; minus the video hosting.

Instead of creating pages from videos people upload to our site; it should create pages from youtube links, so the video is embedded into the page.

The idea is, people will be able to post their youtube videos on the site, and it will be like a refined/filtered edition of youtube.

It seems like a dumb idea, but its main purpose will be as a 'replay section' for a PC game, Starcraft 2. It'll be an easy way for people to search through casted replays, as searching on youtube often brings unrelated results.

It should have a lot of the same features of youtube; a like/dislike system, a comment system, a 'suggested videos' system, search feature. It should also allow people to make channels, quite similar to that of youtubes.

I have no idea how much this would cost or how long it would take, so a rough estimate would be nice.
It is a US based site, if that makes a difference.

who are your users?

timeline = no required deadline, as I'm not sure how long this will take someone to finish, obviously the sooner the better but if it takes a few months because of other things your doing then i understand.

budget = I'm not sure how much time this takes, as I know very little about coding. So I don't know what a fair price for such a project would be. It doesn't have to be unique, so if you can copy code from something and save yourself time thats fine. I imagine I'd end up paying around $500 to $1500, obviously the lower side is more attractive.

users = anyone who wants to make an account on the site.
sort of like how anyone can make an account on youtube and post videos, anyone should be able to make an account on the site and embed video links.

I'm planning on having life-is-random do this for me.
Has anyone worked with him before?

He suggested that I pay him 1/2 when hes 1/2 done the job and the other 1/2 when hes completed it, is that how payment typically works?

Just trying not to get scammed here :)

If the total payment will be under $500 I wouldn't pay anything up front.

Under $500 as a developer I wouldn't expect anything up front. To protect myself I would keep all source code in my control until payment is made. To show my customer the completed project, I would only install it on my own domain.

If total payment gets into the $1000 range, it's typical to pay something up front, though 1/2 might be a little much-- I'd probably do 3 or 4 payments spread out across the life of the project, as progress is demonstrated.

Still searching for a coder;
life-is-random hasn't replyed in 3 weeks...

If someone has made a youtube-copy site in the past, and wants to recycle the code, into this project, that would be perfectly fine.

I sent you a message mate, I'm quite interested in this project, at least let's have a talk. I can provide refferals.
