View Full Version : help creating a video section (a source file for a side bar and a ranking system)

I've been learning css and html, but I'm not experienced with any other coding. my website is made up of a css layout I wrote and html pages that I wrote.

I'm trying to make a videos section on my website.

How it will work:
go to njfail.com/replays
see category icons, click one, it leads you to a page of video thumbnails that are in that category.
You click one of the thumbnails, and it opens another page that has the video on it (the video is hosted on youtube.com, but the page that opens is still on my website instead of youtube's page, that way I don't lose traffic to youtube).

Doing that seems pretty easy, just a bunch of picture links really, right?

But there are 2 things I'd like help with.
I'd like to have a separate section on the side of the page: It should be about 260w x 800h ish and stay in the same position, and it should have a vertical scroll bar.

There will be 2 buttons above it. 1 that says "newest videos" and one that says "best videos". by default it will have 1 of them selected, the user can click the other one to change the list. (in reference to the explanation below, it will change the 'source file').

Since there will be several pages with this on it, is there a way for me to create a html source file where I post the code for the video list, and then just have each page link to that file? And whenever I update the 1 html file manually (which I will have to do because I'm sure having it automatically update with the best rated videos/newest videos will be much more trouble :() all the pages with this side bar are updated automatically because I updated the 'source file' for the side bar.

That leads me to my 2nd point.
I'd like some way to be able to rank the videos.
For instance, a button I place on the video page where each person votes + or - on each video, only 1 vote per IP address though. And the total + and total - for that video are shown on the video page.

is it possible? Or would I need knowledge in java or some other language to do this?
