Don't laugh. I'm trying to add a background image to this theme, but I haven't had any success. I have a VERY basic knowledge of html and CSS, but apparently it's not enough to get me by in this case.

The theme I'm working with is "Der gute Zeitgeist." http://www.tumblr.com/theme/6616

Whenever I try to add a background, it either does not appear, or it appears in the form of a small horizontal slice at the bottom of the page.

The background I want to use can be found at http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/2439/bgsilver.jpg

Thanks for your time!

Where would you need to add the background? To the #container ?

I'm not sure, maybe that's the problem. I just want it behind the layout like any other background image... I'm sure it's something simple that I'm missing, but I've been trying for a few days and I'd really appreciate a little help.

Just add

#container{
background:url(http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/2439/bgsilver.jpg);
} into your CSS and see what happens.

I tried that, it didn't have any affect at all. Maybe it's just coded in a weird way or something... would you mind taking a look at it?

I suspect the declaration you need to modify is here:

.oben{
background:url(http://static.tumblr.com/8nzyuuq/5jVkw9j8r/background.png);
height:15px;
width:100%;
margin:0;
border-bottom: 1px solid #CCC;
}

I know, Tumblr themes are arcane enough without the Anglo-German mix. Simply replace the URI to one of your choosing.

Huh, I hadn't noticed that section before. However, simply replacing the URI didn't do the trick—you might notice its height is set at 15px; it's supposed to be a little ribbon thing above the header. When I insert my own URI and change the height to 960px, it shows the whole image... but not as a background. It pushes the layout down the page. Any way to make it go behind?

...Anyone? I know it's probably a dumb question, but I'd really appreciate the help... I'm kind of tired of messing with this...
