View Full Version : Rendering HTML as an image file?

Does anyone know if there is a way, via PHP or otherwise, to render the HTML of a web-page to an image file, say a GIF, instead of to the browser?

At-the-moment, I am taking screenshots of online stores that our company has built for people, shrinking the shot down and then using it as a hot-link on our homepage to link to said store. The link and accompanying image-link are pulled randomly from a simple text file that I keep on the server.

Ideally, what I would like to have happen is that whatever store is being called up from that textfile to link to would display an image made on-the-fly of the current homepage of that site.

I'm not looking for specifics in this post, although they are greatly appreciated. What I'm really after here is to simply find out if it's possible and get some leads on how to do it so I can go back to my handlers about whether we should pursue it or not.

You can generate images on the fly and dynacmically resize or manipulate images with PHP.

As far as I know there is no way possible to generate screenshots on the fly with PHP nor any other language for that matter.
