View Full Version : Need help identifying which languages to learn

Okay so I'm essentially a beginner and want to learn how to program. I would really like to start at the very beginning and would want a good book for beginners that has a decent amount of exercises BUT I need to know which language I need to learn first.

So here's what I'm looking for: I want to design a website that uses user-submitted content heavily. I guess the closest example I could come up with would be something like Wikipedia where content can be submitted by users (ie pages and information about the subject of that page) but also a sort of user-rating and reviewing like IMDb.

Obviously both of these websites are very advanced (at least I'd assume so) and what I want to do is a bit smaller-scale BUT I assume I'd need to learn HTML but a server would need to do basic calculations based on user-submitted ratings and whatnot.

Does this make sense? Which languages should I start off with? And any books (online or paperback) you'd recommend?

I would try asking somewhere about web programming. HTML is a must, and I don't think you'd really get around PHP. The only thing I'm a bit familiar with is HTML. Since I use the .NET framework alot, I'll suggest you look at ASP.NET, you can program in C# for example. But really it's not a computer programming issue so my advice is probably void.

I think that knowledge of HTML would be very useful for you. I recommend you to find tutorials in the Internet on this issue. I know short and understamdable one, it's here: http://www.divine-project.com/html-tutorial#more-2058. Good luck!

Okay I'll take a look at that link, thank you for the replies so far.

My other questions would be a.( are programs like Dreamweaver or Front Page any good if you also need to keep a sort of database for user data? And b.) do you guys have any specific beginner's books or other online tutorials/guides for HTML?

Oh and if I learn HTML then how different is HTML5? I don't know how these different upgrades/updates/versions of programming work...
