I need to make decorative borders with ***'s only (NO IMAGES!)

<EDIT>Image removed</EDIT>

How about a hand?

Thx :D

PS - Where's Martha Stewart when you need her? Oh yeah...prison.:rolleyes:

i think you need to make a picture that's exactly one asterisk, and then use it as a background picture in cells surrounding your content.

Not what you want but nice decoration :

<table style="border:2 dashed #336699"><tr><td>.........</td></tr></table>

Still lookin' for an answer...:rolleyes:

mind if i ask why it can't be an image? i'm pretty sure that's the only way to do it.

Well, I want to send simple html in emails for my tell-a-friend and using images would severely complicate things (e.g. won't display in hotmail, aol, yahoo, etc).

So, I'm going to use characters like /////// and ******* and ~~~~ for my table borders.

joh6nn
Jul 13th, 2002, 01:47 AM
well, i still thing you have to use images, but i know for a fact that both aol and hotmail accept images in their html mail, if that at all helps.

Ok everyone, just for the laughs:

<table>
<tr>
<td colspan=3>*************************************************</td>
<tr><td>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*</td>
<td><table><tr><td>your table goes here</td></tr></table>
<td align="right">*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*<br>*</td></tr>
<td colspan=3>*************************************************</td>
</table>

Now that I provided you with the posible solution, can you tell me if you honestly believe that those asterisks around your message will make its content any more valuable :rolleyes:

Now, how do you get the ***'s to be evenly spaced around the table like in my first post?

(How do you get an image to display embedded in AOL? I mean hot-linked like:
<img src="http://host.com/me/image.gif"></img>? I can't seem to get it whcih is why I've defaulted to using characters in table borders.)

Thanks :p

You ARE some perfectionist :D :D :D
.... try word-spacing for horizontal (or add & n b s p ; in-between the *)
line-height for vertical

joh6nn
Jul 13th, 2002, 01:22 PM
i don't know, i've never personally done it, by i have an aol account, and i get HTML mail with pictures all the time there ( i use it to collect spam when i sign up for newsgroups, etc. ). next time i get one, i'll take a look at the source, and let you know. or forward it to you, if you like.

zoobie
Jul 14th, 2002, 08:37 AM
I already tried the & n b s p ; which didn't work.

How about an example on how to use the word-spacing and the line-height attributes?

Thanks :p

joh6nn
Jul 14th, 2002, 02:11 PM
word-spacing: fixedamount;
line-height: fixedamount|percentage;

for the life of me, i don't know why word-spacing doesn't take percentages, but according the Guide, it doesn't. i'm thinking maybe they expect you to set it in ems, though i tend to set in pixels.

Could somebody check this?
I can't seem to get the inner nested table up to the top...The "Zoobie's Official Site" should be very close to the top***'s and it doesn't seem to be centering. Thanks :p

<table bgcolor=black width=477px cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0">

Firsty Zoobie, you really really REALLY need to work on your nesting skills :P <b><i>Hello</b></i> is NOT correct. Though it works in IE, it's still a really bad habbit to get into. <b><i>Hello</i></b> Is the right way to go. Think as the <b> tag as the hand, and <i> being the ball. It's physically impossible for the ball and the hand to be holding parts of each other, right (don't get all sciency on me, it's the best analogy I could come up with)?

Here's a page using the first suggestion given to you: an image as a background.

http://24.112.168.19/zoobie/

Just be sure to keep the height and widths of the td and table multiples of 18 (otherwise it'll ruin the pattern. You'll see ;))

Enjoy :)

OK Justabusta

Thanks Syp}{er...Damn that's nice...

Unfortunately, I can't use an image like I said in the first post because images don't display in all emails. That's why I'm doing the way I am...without an image. Bummer...

Still need this fixed so that the Zoobies Official Site is way up nested close to the top ****'s. Isn't there supposed to be a closing </tr> at the very bottom?
I'm lost. :confused:

LMAO!

Someone posted earlier this was supposed to be a laughably simple task...ha!

Using Jeepers code (although mine or Syp}{er's would work), I've switched on the borders to see what's going on.

Problem #1) The nested tr valign's aren't working and neither are the nested td align's.

Problem #2) The $comments line doesn't wrap.

Take a peek here (http://geocities.com/zoobie007/tell.html). :eek:

zoo...
just a try® changing thisss line...(for top/bottom tds)

<td colspan=3 align=left style='line-height: 37px' style='' width="440"><font face=tahoma size=6 color=red>* * * * * * * * * * * * * *</font>

just a gain® /me just a glanced® at it quickly...n' noticed those two possible probs...

n' /me just a vertically® told it to go 'middle' in your twooo vertical columns orrr you could go 'top'...as longgg as they are both just a coded® the same...vs how you have it now??? one is higher than the just a other® on the left/right edges...

I see the outside border as square...but the inner nested tables aligning left...

Somebody tell me why it's not aligning properly. Fix?
