viewing is fine in IE but not quite right in FF
width of the span is correct in IE but spans the whole width of the window in Firefox.
what am I doing wrong?

You've got a lot of errors here (http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://sehanafortress.com/_IE/=test01.html) which may well be causing the problem. In particular you have divs nested within <span> tags which is invalid, and likely to cause unpredictable results. I'd suggest working through these first.

As a general rule if it looks OK in IE but wrong in FF, then there's probably a problem with the code. It's better to code for FF, then have a look at IE and see what needs fixing/amending.
