Linda the Newsanchor: Is there anything sadder? Only drowning puppies. And there'd have to be a lot of them.

That reminds me of something that happened when I used to work in radio and TV. I had just sat down in the radio booth for the start of my shift to relieve the other engineer when the news guy, Emil, came in to read the 5 minutes of local news before the top of the hour. The disk jockey and he sat in an unusually large sound booth and the DJ didn't leave the room, preferring to flip through the newspaper as the news was going on. The other engineer started writing in the log while I flipped through a newspaper, too.

Emil got into his second story, about the sad story of a load of puppies being transported in the back of a station wagon. The puppies all died because exhaust fumes from the car had gotten into the back, killing them all. 30 seconds into this 5 minute newscast, Emil read it like this:

The fumes apparently got into the back because the exhaust pipe crapped leaking toxic fumes into the car.

The other engineer and I both looked up at the same time. The DJ, wide eyed, looked up at us. Now he's stuck in the same room with Emil and can't emit a sound. He slaps his hand over his mouth, jumps up and crawls into a corner trying to stifle his howls of laughter. We are trying not to smile should Emil look up but Emil is breathing heavily:

The other bad thing for him is we didn't have any commercials that time to give him a break. But Emil's a true professional and made it through. It also made it to the station's blooper's tape that is still around to this day.
