View Full Version : Would Like help making an online store template

I'm looking for something I can read that will teach me how to set up forms on my website that will allow people to purchase items. I would rather not use a site that is pre-made, that only needs the items to be typed in. I would like to build that myself from a blank page. So thats what type of tutorial I'm looking for. I have some experience at HTML, and web building, if that concerns you in this matter.

If you need any more information to help you understand my question, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank You,

You need knowledge of a server-side language such as PHP, ASP, Cold Fusion, Ruby on Rails, etc.

Also depending on how you want to store your data you'll need to become familiar with working with a database such as MySQL, SQL Server, etc, or be good with manipulation of files (reading, writing, appending, etc).

Do you know of any websites that will teach me this? I will search for these myself, but if you can recomend any good ones, that would be great. Thanks for the help so far.

I think the important thing to realize is the scope of your project, and the skills you currently have.

An online store is difficult for various reasons, but mostly because you are talking about money. Not knowing any actual programming languages (HTML is a markup language, not programming) means you should really start there. Its kind of like saying you want to build a car from scratch but you've only changed the oil and fixed the bumper.

I don't know of any tutorials that would cover building a whole shopping store front, there are some that might quickly throw together a simple system, but they would be meant to give you a starting point, not a finished product.

I'm not sure on if you want to learn to learn, or learn to have a store, but there is nothing wrong with using a system like Magneto. If you want to learn PHP or a programming language, it would be best to start with the basics, and maybe after a year you will be primed to build such a system.

Otherwise you can always use Paypals system, which has no programming, you just make buttons on their site and add them to your pages.
