View Full Version : Search Engine listing - How to question

Hi guyz and gals,
Just curious on how to get a good rating to reach the search engines first page or couple of pages when searching for your website.
I have googled for this question, but there are a few variations on what to add where and I am not sure what to add or where, so to speak.

Is it OK to add the robots.txt to your server and what do I add to it if so?
Also, do I add some kind of "meta tag" info in relation to this?

Thank you for any help with this in advance.
Cheers for now

It's called Search Engine Optimization. It's a massive subject but the 4 main things are:

1) Titles in articles (don';t have a single title but one that changes according to what content is presented)

2) Titles in urls (also called rewrites)

3) Submit sitemaps in search engines

4) The most difficult is to have backlinks, that is links from other sites that connect back to you.

I believe, the most important thing is to have a semantic markup (http://boagworld.com/technology/semantic-code-what-why-how), which helps search engines to crawl your site in a better manner.

Hi hthought and abduraooft,
Firstly, thanks to both of you for your responses, much appreciated.

Next, I would not call myself a web designer, not by a long shot as the link shared by abduraooft states. Though, I would hope to at some point in my lifetime, but not getting anywhere forward or younger at 36, at this time. Seems as though I am just stuck in a time zone right now. The best I know is only XHTML/CSS, but was hoping to know something more like .php. I don't do much else but care for my family and disabled kids and was hoping to better my lifestyle for them later on in the future.

SO, the "semantics" thing doesn't mean very much to me as I am only (at present) a hobbyist in ......I guess I would say......"creating websites", but as stated above, I hope to better that at some point later down the road, so to speak.
Sorry for rambling guys. just not too good with all this info and tech stuff i guess. I do know that just the basic coding is not good enough to make it work unfortunately.

What else do I need to know to make it work?
Been trying for some time to get better, but the more I look further into things, the more frustrated I get !

Cheers either way guys and thanks again.
