As you can see I've got a semi transparent table cell.
I want the cell's background only to be transparent, leaving the text/images in the cell itself perfectly normal.

Can anyone at least give me a hint as to how this can be done.

Opacity is inherited, so I'm afraid there's not much you can do about that. Absolutely positioning an overlay would do the trick, but your decision to use tables for layout (my guess) probably rules that one out.
