View Full Version : Google XML Sitemap Problems

Hi all,

I'm trying to create an xml sitemap for a site at guilfordnews.com. The problem is the site is set up with lots of folders and the main page (guilfordnews.com/) redirects to guilfordnews.com/community. But there are a lot of other folders and pages like /sherwood and /events, etc. What's the best way to do a sitemap for this?

Should I have multiple sitemaps, i.e. a sitemap in each folder and then a sitemap index file in guilfordnews.com/ ? Or should I just have one big sitemap file in guilfordnews.com/ ?

Is it a problem that guilfordnews.com/index.php redirects to guilfordnews.com/community/index.php if I intend to put one big sitemap in guilfordnews.com/ ?

The reason I'm trying to do this sitemap is I think google is only seeing guilfordnews.com/community and none of the other folders of the site and I thought maybe a sitemap would point the crawlers to those other folders...

A few thoughts on this.

Put the sitemap file in the root. That's where G will look for it. If you have more than 50K pages, you'll need to split it up into two or more files.

Use site:guilfordnews.com and site:www.guildfordnews.com on G to see what pages are being indexed. If there are some missing, look at your server logs to see if G is even trying to hit them. Going forward, use Google Webmaster Tools to tell G whether your prefer www or non-www as the site to index.

Make sure that the pages in question are linked from other pages that you know are crawled on your site. This will increase the likelihood that they're found.

For any important pages that are linking, consider adding them to StumbleUpon or some other bookmarking site to increase the change that G finds them.

I use GSiteCrawler to create XML sitemap files. Give it a shot - it's a piece of cake to use.

Hope that helps!
