This is cut out from complictaed HTML
I see a white stripe, but no 'aaa' text
with no 'background:white' I see nothing

if I inspect the thing with firebug , the 'aaa' part is grayed

what could be the cause ?

<div style = 'z-index:100000000;position:absolute;top:0px;left:100px;width:100px;height:20px;background:white;color: black;'>
aaaa
</div>

lots of things like what doc type are you using but the first thing that stands out to me is the fact that you declaire your styles around single quotes.

Change this:

<div style=''></div>
to this:

<div style=" "></div>

changing ' to "" does not make any difference.

Quotes don't matter except in certain circumstances. Not a factor in your question here. Had no problem seeing text (aaaa) in either Firefox or IE. Some browsers may have a problem with the z-index. You didn't specify which you were using along with whether you had rest of page properly coded. Having a value that large isn't necessary anyway.

We can't comment by seeing the above posted code. There might be other elements on top of this element. Could your post a link?
