That depends on what you need it to do and how the design integrates with your site.

Just an image gallery? You could do Lightbox if you don't mind the transition animation between images. Need more functionality (multimedia, other pages, etc)? In that case you'd consider Thickbox or Shadowbox. They each have a different feel to them as well--something to consider within the context of your site.

I am using thickbox at the min. Are there any advantages to shadowbox?

I've used Thickbox but not Shadowbox. From what I can tell (a Javascript programmer would be able to comment more authoritatively on the robustness of the coding), the primary differences have to do with look and feel. Thickbox is definitely very basic in how it loads content, transitions, etc. Shadowbox seems a lot glossier. So if that's something you're interested in, go for it.
