View Full Version : Netscape 4.x: site-bug

I've created a website and I've tried to make it cross-browser, but now I've found a problem which occurs only in Netscape 4.x. The problem is that when you visit the website for the first time teh text doesn't show up at the right position. Someway the tables are mixed up the first time. When you press the button "welkom" (dutch for 'welcome') to reload the page everything goes back to normal ...
I don't understand what is going wrong and how I can fix it. Any help would be much appreciated! The url of the site is:

Thanx Michiel

PS any other bugs/ general comments etc. are welcome as wel :)

I see the text block hard-left, underneath your navlinks, and consistently so however much I refresh.

What it might be ... you're using javascript to open a table, then normal html to populate it. IMO *never* do this - generate tables in one pure method, or the other, but never a combination of both. Say a browser has no JS - they will end up with invalid and undisplayable HTML because they only see the nonscripted bits.

I have an intuition that changing that will solve your problem ... you might be experiencing a sort of "synchronisation of data loading" issue related to the strange way in which ns4 parses tables. It may be that the output html (inside the js interpretor) is not in the correct order, hence the display problem. This is a guess.

anyway ... also IMHO ... who cares about netscape 4? This is 2003 - let it go I say. I'm familiair with the "I would if it wasn't for a client" argument, but my experience is that, in business far more than in personal dev, ns4 is considered more time consuming that it's worth.

Hi Brothercake,

I'll see what I can do about the javascript. You see I use it to get the tables to fit all resolutions. Btw the site must be suitable for NS 4: a large percentage of the visitors a browsing with NS 4, because this is the main browser on the computers of the university I study at. So I can't afford to not make the site NS4 compatible. If anyone has got any ideas that might help I'd be very happy!

Thanx Michiel

Petition with the University to have the IT dept upgrade the browsers. It's all free and shouldn't take too long.

Any University worth it's salt should be embarassed that it's student body has to use such antiquated software.

In short, fix the problem, not the symptom.

You're absolutly right about that, I agree that an upgrade is necesarry .... but until that time I don't want to deprive a lot of my visitors ....

The good brothercake and beetle are absolutely right. What kind of University would have 4 year old equipment? I think you're getting gyped in terms of quality education, personally. :D

PS - FYI, the reason Universities and libraries use NS is that most viruses are written for IE. :p
