View Full Version : immidiate pop-up/down?

I want to add quick&easy instructions to a page where space is really limmited. So I was thinking of these little popup windows that immediatly appear when hovering over an element and dissappear when the mouse moves off it.

How are these done?
If it's overly complicated/too much work for use on a single page, other suggestions are welcome.

Can be done with just CSS but this requires that the element be a link.
Anything else you will need to use javascript.
Have a look through the tooltips here and see if there are any that will suit your needs.

You can add them to ANY tag on the page using title="the text you want to display when the mouse hovers over this tag". You only need javaScript if you want something other than text.

I don't think the title attribute is consistent enough or immediate enough to adequately fulfill the role of a tooltip, though.

Great, thanks for the links _Aerospace_Eng_ !

I had considered using either a title or the other similar tag, but like pennimus said, it's not really suited for the job. But thanks for the suggestion.

I just noticed Opera opens a pop-up of where a link links to, how can I disable this behaviour?

You can disable it but only on your system. Other users will get the tooltip from Opera. Its in there as a security issue, so the user knows exactly where the url goes. To disable it on your end press CTRL + F12 > Advanced Tab > Click Browsing > Uncheck box that says "show tooltips".
