I'm posting links to several Microsoft Word documents on my website in order for visitors to download these documents. I want to be sure that visitors with older versions of Microsoft Word will be able to open and save these documents. Which of following should I use when saving my original documents for use on my website?

Word Document (*.doc)

Rich Text Format (*.rtf)

Word 97-2003 & 6.0/95 - RTF (*.doc)

IMO, if you have formatting that needs to be preserved, post a PDF. If you do have have any formatting that needs to be preserved post it as a web page or an .rtf if you really need to have someone download it.

If you just need the user to be able to view the files, Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=95E24C87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en) can do that. If you’re using Office 2007 though, they’ll have to download the large compatibility pack noted in the middle of that page though.
