I am trying to use JavaScript to check if Windows workstation has PDF working on it. My attempt below doesnt show anything:

if (execCommand("assoc | findstr pdf");
document.write('<a href=mypdf.pdf>pdf</a>');
alert('Cant bring up PDF');

Please advise.

Why not just put somewhere on the page that the linked document requires Acrobat Reader, then give an Acrobat Reader download link. That's what I do on my site.

This is an intranet site and doesnt connect to internet.

Also, the problem is the pdf software is not working on some workstations.

I was hoping I could detect that with client side scripting.

You would need to be able to scan the person's hard drive to see if Acrobat Reader was installed. As far as I know, that's not possible.

Since this is an intranet with no access to the internet, perhaps you could just change the page's message to tell them to call tech support if they are unable to read the file.
