View Full Version : Frames within Frames Help

I'm new to web design and don't understand all the language. I have designed a site in FrontPage 4.0 (came with Office 2000) using frames. My main page has 3 frames, the top is a banner and the left side is the navigation bar. I have set it up so that when you click on anything in the navagation bar it's supposed to pop up in the right "main" frame. I have designed another one of the pages with 2 frames. I have picture thumbnails on the bottom and when you click on it, the preview opens in the top frame. This frame page should open in the main frame when you click on the navigation bar. It works fine on my FrontPage preview, but when I go to Preview in Browser, it opens that one frame page as it's own page and not within the main frames page. Meaning, my navigation and banner are gone and the only way to get back to the home page is to click the browser back button on the internet explorer toolbar. All the other pages work fine. Is it possible to have a frame page open within another frame? Can anyone help me?

Hi princesjewel,

I think that you have many frames and that you should reconsider your site structure. Why do you want so many frames?

1. You can put the banner in an iframe :
<iframe src="banner.jpg" width="410" height="100" border="0" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"></iframe>

2. Look for a menu that fits your needs in Css/Dhtml/Javascript - help sites.

I have a site in mind to design, but have been unsuccessful at getting the results I need. The latest design with the frames was working until I went to preview in Browser. My big problem is this:

I want to put various thumbnails on a page and would like the preview to pop up on the same page. I thought frames would be best because before I had frames, I would lose the navigation bar everytime you'd click on a picture and the only way to get back to the main page is to click the toolbar browers back button. I've also tried letting the picture open in same page, but once again, you have to go back using the tool bar. I'm probably making it more difficult than it needs to be. I just want something simple where they can see the thumbnails and the preview pop up on same page with out losing my buttons to swith between pages.

suggest that traditional PopUps are not best for displaying images

I think when refering to popUp,
it is not an actual popUp as in a new window.open call
but that the image should load in the 'main' frame in the frameset

but instead,
it is appearing in an actual popUp,
as in appearing outside of the frameset
which is not wanted

Look at these pages below for some interesting previewers:

Search keywords in search engines [image preview script, thumbnail script etc]

Thanks for the links. I think I confused everyone when I said "popup". What I meant was the image is set up to appear in another frame on the same page when you click on the thumbnail. I just don't understand why it's not working when I preview in Browser. I just want to have the preview come up on the same page without losing the thumbnails or the navigation bar. Right now I'm losing the bar, meaning they have to click the browser back button to get back to the previous page.

I'm working with an old Frontpage 4.0 and I think I just need to stop stressing out and by another program. Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
