View Full Version : Help regarding Windows Vista's compatibility/'useability' with Office 2003

I've just got a laptop which has Windows Vista and I am told it is the latest upgrade from XP. (I'm sorry I am a little behind with all this technology!).

My desktop computer has Windows XP on it.

First annoyance: had to buy Microsoft Office 2007 and install it on the laptop in order for my work from my desktop computer to be compatible with it because apparently, I was told that the last version of Office software I have (Office 2003) (also in use on my desktop computer) is not compatible with the Windows Vista laptop. (Is this true? I bought 2007 and installed it nevertheless).

Second annoyance: Although, after installing Office 2007 on the Windows Vista laptop, I can work on documents created in my desktop computer's last Office version (Office 2003), I now find that if I create documents in my newly installed Office 2007 in my Windows Vista laptop, they do not work/open in my desktop computer. They show up as .docx or something like that.

There is a feature in Vista, which lets you save documents in the old Office 2003 version when you go to 'save as', but this is limited, because if, for example, I have a text box in my document, when I try to work on the document in my desktop computer, I can't edit the document. Thus although this time the document can be opened, what's the use?

I hope this makes sense... I seem to be garbling on... but I am annoyed. What is a person to do? E.g. at my workplace the computers are not Windows Vista or Office 2007 . So if I create any work on my Office 2007 Vista laptop, what am I to do? I won't be able to work on them/transfer them to the computers at my workplace.

Of course, I am not 100% familiar with this laptop, so if anyone can make suggestions or point me in the right direction if I have got the wrong end of the stick, I would really appreciate it.

I bought the laptop for ease of convenience - but it isn't turning out to be that is it!

I installed office 2003 on Vista Premium last week without issue... I say without issue... all I did was open word and excel ... didn't actually do anything with them (not that I would really know how to :))

You know you could always just try it ;)

Too bad your office isn't upgrading to v2007 - I love the new Office!

I've never tried 2003 on Vista but it's supposed to work. (http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_Software_Compatibility_List)

Since you've already bought 2007 there is this available:

To help ensure that you can exchange documents between Microsoft Office releases, Microsoft has developed a Compatibility Pack for the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. By installing the Compatibility Pack (Beta 2 Technical Refresh) along side of Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP, or Office 2003, you will be able open, edit, save, and create files using the robust file formats new to the 2007 Microsoft Office system.

Okay. I think what I’ll do is:

1 try installing Office 2003 on my Windows Vista laptop – as I should have tried doing in the first place (if I’d have had any common sense :o and been brave. I had thought that if I did that and it was incompatible, I might ruin something in the laptop. So I bought and installed Office 2007). The question is can I try installing Office 2003 on my Vista laptop now even though I have already installed Office 2007 - so that I have both installed and can have the choice to use which one I want?

2 If the Office 2003 installation on the laptop is successful, I will also then try downloading that compatibility package you have recommended onto my laptop.

3 I will also install the compatibility package onto my desktop computer so that if I use Office 2007 in my laptop, it won’t be a problem working on those documents on my desktop computer.

Does that sound ok?

I know it seems silly writing all that down :o but all my ditherings since I got the laptop have made my mind ‘pickled’ and confused. Thank you for any clarifications…

uninstall office 2007 by using add/remove programs in the control panel, then install office 2003

if both PC's are running the same version of office no compatibility pkg is needed

You should have no issues what so ever with outlook 2003 on vista. I also just bought a laptop the day vista came out. Went home, uninstalled the office 2007 that came with the machine. Installed office 2003, ran ms office update and have not had issues at all. I did have issues with vista itself and the functionality of it's communication with other machines on my network. IE it wont see shared folders or printers. So I have removed vista and installed XP. But when it was running I had no problems with office 2003 at all and it ran for roughly 2/3 weeks. Agree with others here, fully remove office 2007. But if you bought it then just use it.
