View Full Version : Folder confusion

01-25-2007, 03:03 AM

I would appreciate some help. Here's my dilemna. I am doing a website for a mortgage company. Many of the loan officers have requested personal websites. I will provide this service for them.

I would like to provide different ways to show their URL. One being www.ncsmtg.com/theirname and the other being theirname.ncsmtg.com.

I am starting out with one loan officer. I made hers www.ncsmtg.com/elainekayhan. Another request was for the application page results being sent to each respective loan officer's email inbox. So, I made it so that from Elaine's page, they can click on the Apply link in the menu and be taken to that page within the Elaine folder. In fact, they can click on the apply link from any page after coming from her site and the link would go to her application page and then those form results will be sent to ther email. This form is exactly the same form as found in the Apply page from the original website. But in the original apply page, the results are sent to a general email inbox. Hence, the reason I made it so that users can click from anywhere after her page and still get to the form that will be sent to her.

Doing this, I still wanted to keep the style sheet and images pointing to the root directory, so to do that I did this
href="../stylesncs.css". This works perfectly when I go to www.ncsmtg.com/elainekayhan

The problem is here...
I also wanted elainekayhan.ncsmtg.com. I made it so that this sub-domain points to the elainekayhan folder. So, from my experience elainekayhan.ncsmtg.com and www.ncsmtg.com/elainekayhan are the same folder. Or, elainekayhan.ncsmtg.com points to the index file of the elainekayhan folder. Now that I have the subdomain set up, it points to the correct page. But, the style sheet and the images which are in the root folder are not being utilized. Is there a way to fix this by using something other than
href="../stylesncs.css"? Or should I just put the style sheet and images within her folder.

I am thinking ahead to the future. I would like to edit a photo or stylesheet in case I need to and just do it in one place. Not have to change the stylesheet in both the root folder and then in every single one of the loan officer pages.

I really hope I made sense. Please help me out. Thanks.

When you want to get a file from a parent directory (which is root for you), this is an example of how you do it.

Example URl: http://connorb.com/example/index.html

If I linked my style sheet to the page "index.html", but my style sheet was at "http://connorb.com/styles/sheet.css", I'd link it like this:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="/styles/sheet.css" type="text/css" />

If I linked it and the style sheet was at "http://connorb.com/examples/styles/sheet.css", I'd link it like this:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="styles/sheet.css" type="text/css" />

I tried this, but it still didn't work. Once again, www.ncsmtg.com/elainekayhan works, but elainekayhan.ncsmtg.com doesn't. Same exact problem. What the heck is going on?? This is killing me!!

What control panel do you use?

I am using the Hosting Manager provided by my hosting company, GoDaddy.com. I deleted and then restarted the sub-domain, to see if maybe that could help. It hasnt' been activated yet, and it's getting late, so I"m going to bed. I will work on this first thing in the morning. I'll let you know what happens. Thank you so much for helping me.

have you tried putting the entire link in there?

instead of just putting

Ok. That worked wonderfully! Thank you so very much!

Just so you (and others know), the reason why the /stylesncs.css didn't work when you access the site using the subdomain is that the base URLs are different.

when its ncsmtg.com/elainekayhan the site is running in a sub folder below the root of the site. But when its just elainekayhan.ncsmtg.com it is running in the root of the site as far as the browser is concerned.

That is why you had to put the full URL to the stylesheet in.
