View Full Version : (1stName+Surname) or Fullname

I know it is a matter of personal preferences but I need your experience on this one. I do a lot of sites where I keep visitors identity as name and surname in seperate MySQL columns. I don't know why but I simply started like this. Naturally, the signup form also contains to seperate fields like name and surname.

I am thinking of gathering this info in a single (fullname) field and store it in a single DB field.

I would like to listen to your experiences, does seperating these two names help the admin in any way? Keeping the name and surname seperate from each other, will this bring advantages to me some day?

For myself, it depends on the application I have designed. I am working on an Intranet system right now so I have a separate field for first, middle and last name. It makes life easier on me for sorting names.

I do, however, create a fourth field called display_name. In my company, there are some picky people who don't like their real name. An example being someone named Susan who only likes to be called Sue. So when she communicates with other users, they only see her display_name but people such as the HR department can see her real info if desired.

I would go with a separate field for each name. I feel that you should always try to preserve as much info as possible. If you have their first and last names, why merge them together and lose the extra flexibility?

That's how I would do it!

Have a first, middle and last name fields, plus a display name field.
