On my site, I have my navigation as a div embedded in another div (the div which contains the main body). I have the navigation div floating to the left, and I have given it a negative left margin so that it appears to be outside of the div and the text flows up. I looks and works like I want it to, and it validates. However, the navigation div does not appear in Internet Explorer for PC (it does for IE for Macs), and although the div appears in Safari, the links are not accessible. Am I doing something wrong, or is there something I'm not thinking about? Thanks.

I was able to find a solution. Using negative margins confused some of the older browsers. Instead of positioning the main div and the navigation div with margins, I used absolute positioning.

Why would you use negative margins in the first place? Why not float the left column like the example here? http://bonrouge.com/2c-hf-fixed.php
