View Full Version : Div width problem in Internet Explorer PC

Nov 16th, 2006, 04:49 PM
I'm having trouble getting this site to obey the width property of a certain div tag in Internet Explorer 6 for PC. It looks correct in Firefox and on Safari Mac.

On the page below, the left column is called #wideleftcolumn and the right column is called #narrowrightcolumn. I've given the left column a property of 400 pixels wide. It should be narrow enough to leave a little over 20 pixels of space before the right-floated column with the vertical border.

This is how it looks on Mac Safari:

But on IE PC the div and it's contents stretch all the way to the left border of the right column, leaving no space between the text and the border. I thought maybe this was that box model issue IE has, but hasn't that been fixed in version 6? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Here is the css for that:

#container {
margin: 0 auto;
width: 764px;
background-image: url(images/layout/center-shadow.gif);
background-repeat: repeat-y;
#wideleftcolumn {
float: left;
width: 400px;
padding: 0 0 20px 42px;
#narrowrightcolumn {
float: right;
width: 245px;
border-left: 1px solid #666;
margin-right: 42px;
padding-top: 0;
padding-bottom: 20px;
padding-left: 15px;

Oh yeah, and this is my first post. Hello everyone.
