I'd like to call an executable program with JavaScript.
This would only be for my use not for a webpage.

Is it possible?

Using Windows + IE: Yes.

Just create an anchor (link) tag that points to the local file name of the program. For example:

<a href="c:\skulltag\skulltag.exe">SkullTag Doom</a>

click the link.
You can set the security settings for the local intranet in the custom dialog so that the security dialogs do not pop up.

You can change the link's href attribute with javascript.

I actually use a web page that I created as the background for my desktop.
I use the above technique on the "background" web page to launch programs I like to frequent. In fact, I have used this technique for years, and have not a single Icon on the desktop :) Currently my desktop has a pull out menu that contains the links to the programs I frequent and a javascript tetris game playing constantly in the center...

The javascript window.open('filename.exe'); works great in the "background" web page as well.

Create a HTML + Javascript web page
Instead of a picture, use the web page you created as your background.
