Adding canonical URL tags into XML fed shops

I have a variety of shops that I think are being penalised by google for basically being the same duplicate content. This is because they are all fed from XML same source.

I have a theory of using the canonical URL tag for at least some of the key categories/products so that e main shop receives no duplicated penalty.

Can anyone think how I would do this? Would I have to add a new line specifying the canonical address and then some code to the site to interpret that fed data.

OR... could I just place some code on the site that dynamically takes the URL currently in the browser, copies it, strips out the root shop domain, replaces it with a desired one held in a variable, and then generates and laces this into a canonical link tag on the fly?

Sorry im all theory and not a great programmer.

Um. Wow. You want us to help you beat Google at their own game. A company that hires the best and brightest software engineers in the world to work for them versus this forum. A company that, when it catches people trying to game their system, will deliberately punish those people by dropping them from any search results to be found - or at least severely lowering their placement.

We're good at programming, but we're not that caliber of good. No unpaid individual is.

You might be better off trying to contact Google's technical support and trying to find out what's going on for sure.

Ok thanks anyway. I'm not trying to beat them as such just comply better to their guidelines by adding canonical tags.

I just need to work out how to dynamically add these into the desired shop pages. If I figure it out I'll post up what I did just incase it's of interest to anyone else out there.
