    Price Inquiry

I have an idea and need to create a website idea with a similar format and structure to a mixture of these websites http://www.reddit.com and http://www.glogster.com/. How much would making a website like this cost?

Would anyone be willing to work on my project?

Are there any web developers that are able/willing to create this website for a price?

Have you considered using pligg as a starting point? Or are you looking for a complete "build from scratch" approach?

    What's your timeline / budget?

    Thank you

For now I will try creating a rough demo website so that when I present my idea people will have something to see. Thank you for recommending pligg. It gives me a starting point

So I looked at what pligg has to offer and with it seems like I could create a rough outline of how my website would work however it does not provide the proper functionality I would like to have. Is it possible for me to create what I can in pligg and then get a professional to modify the things I can not? I am trying to create a new type of activity so that people can start benefiting from the internet. Something that is currently not available (Being very vague). As for my budget I am not sure whether I should pay someone to just create the website and try to expand it by myself, or find a partner that I can work with.

Good question, and it's going to be tough to have an answer. In general, starting with a framwork and customizing it to fit your needs is a quick way to get a "proof of concept" out the door. It could be much cheaper to start with pligg, and customize it to do what you want. However (and this is important), you will most likely be trading flexibility for speed. Meaning, if you plan to add a lot of features later, you may put yourself in a hole by starting with pligg. Pligg has an architecture designed for a specific purpose, using it for another purpose may not work - for example, pligg is a social networking application, not ecommerce. If you want to have a social networking e-commerce app, pligg will fall short. The same thing would apply if you started with an e-commerce app like Magento, and tried to add social networking.

So, the question you need to ask is this (IMO): Do you think you'll have the money to re-code later? Or should you spend the extra money now to build the platform you want?

On the partnership vs. paying a programmer...

If you plan on seeking a partner, be prepared to answer some tough questions like: Why is your concept original? How will you make money? What are the ownership arrangements going to be? Who will control the money? Who's your target market? etc.

    Thoughts on the Plan

At this point I have decided to pursue finding a web design partner while seeing if I can also find someone who can just make it and leave. Since I am creating a social media site I think it would be better for me to find a partner who is able to grow and expand the website. For now I am going to focus on creating a business plan and a presentation so I have something to show people. I just had a couple of questions on legality issues. How am I suppose to talk to anyone without them just taking the idea? Do I get people to sign a legal contract saying that if they wish to work with me they have to promise not to take the idea? Are there any copyright applications I can file?

    Thank you
