    Biography Website

I have been asked to do a website about somebody's life story. I will have one main page, then a menu navigating to probably 6 other pages. He wants me to put his story onto a webpage.

For 7 pages of work, HTML, CSS and JavaScript included, what would be your average price to charge? If you want to put the price in your own currency, that's good but I am from England so if needs be I can check the rates.

This is my first 'project' and I don't want to pass this opportunity up, so I've come on here near-on straightaway for some professional advice. If anybody could advise me I would be extremely grateful.

    Thank you.

First off, I would use Wordpress. It is much easier to update and maintain than html.

Our premium themes for something like this start at $100.

If you are dead set on html I would charge around $200. I have software that makes html templates so it does not take me very long. What does take all of the time is adding all of the content.

I have seen a lot of other guys are charging around $500 for this amount of work.

If all the pages use the same CSS layout, I wouldn't charge more than $100.

Ah that's brilliant, that gives me a mark to start to work from. I was going to use a CSS layout which is the same for all the pages. The only thing that will be different on each page is the content.

Hmm, from Fumigator's suggestion that equates to about £60 in the UK, which I think is extremely cheap for what sounds like a bespoke website. Many web companies will be charging closer to £400 or more for that sort of thing.

It's not quite clear how complex the site is, but you're talking about javascript as well, so it sounds like it's not just some text on a page.

I wouldn't underestimate the length of time you'll spend on it - particularly if you're adding all the content as well. You might want to think about how many hours you might expect to spend and then consider what a reasonable hourly rate would be.

I wouldn't go below £100, and that's still very cheap for a website I think - but reflects first project and all that. You don't want to undervalue yourself!

Keep in mind your competition: India.

Any maybe I'm missing something here; here are the features of the website:

    1. CSS layout, consistent throughout site (very simple to replicate header/menu/footer, under an hour certainly)
    2. Main page with links to detail pages
    3. Seven Detail pages containing HTML formatted text (Text not created by you and provided in what I would assume is a format you can mostly copy/paste in)

Yeah... I didn't think there would be any Javascript to put that together. There may be details that bring the price up but for a website containing those three things, a proficient web developer is looking at _maybe_ 3 hours. $30/hour is pretty reasonable.

It will mostly be HTML and CSS, at the moment I have only decided to put moving text using JavaScript (from left to right).

What I have in mind is doing a floating box-model layout using CSS and using this layout for all 7 pages. The only thing that will change will be the content. It is a website for a friend who's boyfriend is in prison in America. She wants a biography all about his life which he has written from inside. She has all the content so it will just be a case of writing the story.

I do believe she wants to be here as I do the website so I can see things being added/removed on an 'as-we-go' basis. Thanks for all your responses, and I will bear them all in mind when I come to quote her a price. I will be contacting her today after deciding on a reasonable/fair price.

    Thank you.

I tell my clients and prospective leads that I don't compete on price. I compete on quality, consulting, and thinking outside the box. If all you're interested in the lowest price, I'm not your guy - it's that simple.

Indian programmers (and Eastern European and other $5 / hr or less programmers) are that way, typically because they have been taught a vary rigorous and standard process, and excel that way. If you have a full spec - and I mean FULLY DOCUMENTED ERM, UML, process flow chart, etc, and think you know everything about the project, using cheap labor that just needs to follow the plan is the way to go. If you have a rough idea, you need to pay for experience and ideas to bring your concept to life, not just hire programming code-monkey.
