    Post Startup company looking for experienced coder

    I'm the co-founder of the web-based startup company Skillocracy. We're looking for experienced PHP and MySQL developers to join our team of 5 and complete development of our site.

    Skillocracy offers a radical new solution for outsourcing work, with a dramatic advantage from the buyer’s perspective. Our competitors earn over $5mm per year and are growing at 50%+; we have a highly differentiated solution with patentable features that will set us apart in this field.

    We can offer you equity in the company which, if our development efforts are successful, will be a far better pay for your time than any hourly job would be. Here is your chance to make a difference in the world and in your career!

    We’re near completion of a working prototype (2-3 months from launching a beta site). My co-founder and I are both somewhat technical, but our background is more in design and business strategy. We are looking for someone experienced to complement our skills and add significant value from a technical perspective. If you’re curious about our concept, and would like more details, please get in touch. You can reply here or email me at curban@skillocracy.com

    If I had a dollar every time I heard that...

    Anyway what you really need is an angel investor to invest in your idea so you can hire a talented web developer to join your team. Angels take on the risk for a chance at a piece of the reward-- it's what they do. Developers don't like risk-- we like money. The developers who like both, risk AND money, are usually working on their own ideas-- why share the reward if I don't have to?

    Good luck!

    @Fumigaotr: lol - twice. There must have been a dozen or so of these wonderful offers in the past couple of weeks? Only one seemed to me to have any legs.

    @OP:
    Skillocracy offers a radical new solution for outsourcing work, with a dramatic advantage from the buyer’s perspective. Our competitors earn over $5mm per year and are growing at 50%+; we have a highly differentiated solution with patentable features that will set us apart in this field.
    what is $5mm?

    If you have a highly differentiated solution and it contains patentable features, how do you propose to discuss this wonderful project with anyone?

    if you ain't got the patent -why not?

    and if you ain't got the patent, is it really patentable? How do you know?

    But, if it is patentable; by talking about it you risk putting it into the public domain which instantly disqualifies it from being in any way patentable.

    Not to know that, raises more questions about how you could know it is patentable.

    @anyone:
    Am I the only one who seems to see numerous new 'patentable' ideas seeking a programmer to assume some of the risk, as if they are VC's themselves?

    It seems to me more often this past month and that people seem to think that simply saying it is patentable, is enough to draw an interest. Indeed; if it turns out not to be patentable, that person has just lost their business credibility - permanently. And, as I wrote earlier, talking about it merely removes any patentablility.

    Apologies for being so cynical but I am beginning to despair at the number of poeple whom I have heard prattle on about patentability lately. Most don't have a clue or realise that if it were patentable in the US, that that patent doesn't apply anywhere else. And the fact that patents are more easily obtainable in the US, than in UK/Europe is more to do with them being approved so that the Courts resolve the disputes, which puts that part of the process into a melting pot style lottery, where the small guy hasn;t the fiscal where with all to fight it.

    In the UK, if you get a patent, it can apply throughout Europe (for the same cost) and it will be much more secure since it has to satisfy four key principles. These four key principles ,make the patent much stronger and therefore, more valueable.

    I'll stop before I rant.

    too late!

    p.s. $5mm is 5 millimeter dollars, which are 1/100th the value of a normal dollar; in other words, 5 cents.

    Hmm. That still sounds a bit high, doesn't it?

    I appreciate the constructive (and also the humorous) comments!
    Since the time of this posting we've managed to bootstrap ourselves a working product. I appreciate the interest of those who responded to my post.

    Regarding the concerns about patentable: we certainly wont make any enabling public disclosures about our technology that would preclude a patent. That still allows us to discuss specifics privately with people on an NDA. And I realize patentability alone does not mean business success.

    $5mm = five million dollars.
    From wikipedia:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MM#Numbers
    $MM, million dollar. Also as $mm Example: $15.3MM = Fifteen point three million dollars

    Cheers!
