    Your thoughts please!

Hi, I've been looking to start some professional web designing, and have been trying to think of a nice design for a while. This one appeared in my mind, and I coded it. But then, after I made up to the navbar, It took another few weeks to decide what color scheme to use for the content.
Can you read the paragraphs easily enough? Do you suggest another font/color? Do you feel like something is missing on the right side of the page, maybe an image spanning to the bottom of the container?
    Thanks for your opinions!
This is my first true effort to make a multi-browser friendly site, not using tables.
For now, I'm more worried about this than what to do with a footer (although I have a vision of it)
Link moved and edited. If you want to view new changes to design, go to link in profile. This is the original design:
    The site

in the meantime I made a footer. do you think it should be a different bg color? (it actually IS a different background color than the main content, but barely noticable.) I experimented with some non-greyscale colors like a dark green or orange but they all seemed too disruptive of the overall layout's color scheme.

I'm slowly coming around with the text to put in, so I'll soon edit my signature to exclude "under construction".

Something that came accross my mind recently: 404. Although I really doubt there ever will be one, i'll make a 404 in the style of the site.

I agree about it needing a little color, though I think only a splash would do, though I'm ignorant enough of artistic critical analysis to be at a loss for where. Maybe the h3's?

Also, in the navigation point, the "contact" goes over into the next line. Is it supposed to do that? (I'm using Safari, with my screen set to 1024 x 768.)

    I hope this is helpful!

I know about that problem in Safari. It's not really the problem of the browser, but more of the fonts (I don't think MAC has regular Arial font, so the alternative has wider letters, so it goes into a new line). I considered fixing it, but then I'd have to truely center the links (right now I use padding to achieve a quasi centering), which would bring a load of new cross-browser issues which I don't feel like fixing. I'm currently researching an alternative sans-serif font that Is located on MAC systems that has the same or less character width than Arial; that way it would be on one line!
For colors I'll experiment on the h3's. (i was thinking of putting a decorative image to the right of the text, i need to figure out how to make a logical markup for it; an empty div isn't correct semanticly, and works only in IE i think). Thanks guys, keep it coming please!

okay i added a color to the right of the text (view edits at croatiankid.com, view the orig at croatiankid.com/v2/). it's just that every change in color i add, it seems to drastic. lol sometimes when i look at it (now with the bi-color) it looks like somethings missing, but sometimes it looks like it's nice without anything in it. what do you think of it (please follow up on design edits)?

Update: added Geneva font before Arial in font list; i'm checking with browsershots.com how it will turn up in safari on mac. fingers crossed .
No! searching for an alternative again

The div color method works for everything I've tried it in (Safari, IE, & Firefox).

Hm... Put the color to the left; it draws the eyes, so that'll draw the reader to read your content, rather than ignore it because the color outdoes it.

I don't know enough about fonts to suggest the Mac alternative; sorry. Have you tried Helvetica?

Its quite strange just to have that block of colour on the right hand side. Instead maybe you could have a graphic of some sort.

Another thing which you could do is to put in your introduction content why people would want standards complient websites and even what a standards complient website is as I'm sure that only a minority of people have ever heard of the idea.

well I think it looks better with the sidebar, but although a fan of orange, I dont think the color suits your site.

Possibly use the blue that you have for the headings, although I thnk that will be to bright so tone it down a tad. make sure you out line it in thast light grey so it fits in the design a little as well.

and just a thought, and the bottom of the side bar put the silhouette of the people at the bottom. sort give a top and bottom continuity if you will

i'll figure something out. i was thinking of maybe putting something like 'recent/site news' in the side bar, so it's not just empty. will experiment with color combinations. do you think the headers look better now that they're bluish, and not the same as the text?

I'll make the bolded clean and standards compliant a link to the web development part, where i'll explain coding and stuff

Update: I slightly changed the h3 color, and changed the right column color. does it still look like something's missing (like there should be text in it)?

My first impression is that it's a mite too bright, but I think if you move it to the left as I suggested it'll attract attention to the text rather than draw attention away from it. Probably thin it some, too.

I don't think you should add anything within it, though.

    Is this helpful?

unfortunately, i coded something wrong. idk where. maybe with the order of divs, maybe css, maybe both. but i know that this is giving me a headache, and am afraid i might have to recode it.

edit: HUGE sigh of relief. Fixed it (nothing to fix actually). I love it when I bash my head for up to an hour thinking how to do something, and then the simplest, one css attribute solutions comes to me. .

I'm uploading the edited css. I thinned it and put it on left. think it looks better? (i'll keep quiet, so i get your true opinions).
    lighter
    darker
    darkest

I've noticed that the darker I make it, it's more intense actually (you'd think for some reason the brighter it gets the more intense it is)

I like the darkest one the best. It compliments the dark grey background of the content.
