    Please Review and comment > still under development.

    Well,
    I had another thread for this, however I am no longer able to edit any of my posts and i wanted to update the title.

    also, no one was really commenting on the new design. i had posted a design, took some critic on it. made some MAJOR changes, no more critic.

    so here it is in all of it's glory

    http://www.rlemon.com/rlemon_2006/ <= intro page

    http://www.rlemon.com/rlemon_2006/index2 <= Main Page

    Some things to note:
    -the main 'white' section of the site will encompase all main content (not done yet)
    -the site does not use a database. All content is flat file driven or xml driven.
    Also, the hit counters, online users, and msn status reports do not use db's
    -the google adsense stuff is filler. I do not plan on keeping it there for later versions of this site, but for now, as i have no real 'products' to offer, thats what is going to be there.
    -there is a small problem with purging my hits text file. The hit count always seems to be off by one or two after i purge. however reload the page three times and it fixes itself .

    Well, hopefully you can provide some constructive crit for this new design.

    I just ran some HTML validation and i go thtis:

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht...on_2006/index2

    you will notice it's all in my mailto link - is there a better way to define what is to be in the subject and body, also who is cc'd??

    the css is not valid, i need to go through and clean it up... lots of like

    color with no background-color set// errors
    public string ConjunctionJunction(string words, string phrases, string clauses)
    {
    return (String)(words + phrases + clauses);

    care to elaborate on the chatroom comment (sorry i'm not a big chat room user).

    I think the issue is really lack of content.

    also, thankyou for the input on the html validation errors, i will try that now.

    Just the boxyness of it with the big white space in the middle and the 'users' bit at the beginning. Just looks like a really old java chat room... before graphics and stuff.

    You're not selling you'reself as a webdesigner with this site. I may seem cruel when I do these reviews but I'm honest. I speak my mind and I dont pull any punches - if that bothers you then stop reading now.

    Ok, the design is pretty much none existant and the code is that horrible 'transitional' mix of divs and tables that really shouldnt be found on the newly designed portfolio of any web designer.

    You describe yourself as a creative developer and designer but theres no evidence of that on your site. Black, white and 6 shades of grey is dull to look at, there are no graphics aside from a couple of icons and the text doesnt have enough contrast for decent readability.

    Everything is on the same level in terms of visibility. Nothing stands out or grabs my attention. Your navigation is 'invisible'. Navigation should shout out 'click me'. If your navigation is going to be anywhere other than in a column on the left hand side of your site (standard convention for many years) then you need to draw attention to it so your visitors know where it is and dont think that your homepage is all there is to the site.

    As much as I detest splash pages yours is probably the best part of the site. It has style and life, its simple but it looks good. Then I click through to the rest of your site and it looks like a framework thats waiting for design. It looks in fact like a site that I was working on recently where there design wasnt done when the coding started so I built a framework and applied a very little css, only basic structure and used greyscales when I needed to use shading to separate things. Now the design is done its looking fabulous in pink, blue and yellow (printer company). It looks 'finished' now. All thats changed is some colour and a few images (4 in total for all pages except the homepage)
    but it makes a huge difference.

    I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to be honest.

    thankyou for the crit.

    I know the site does not show my 'graphic' side, or my 'design' work up front but thats ok for now.

    the grapics of the site, the boxes, and all that jazz will eventually be redone for a later version, however for now i'm working on the basic funcitonality and the content of the site.

    But back to the 'site is ugly' comment (not you exact words, but i know its not the most graphic intense site) - hopefully when i add stuff into the white square, and maybe some texture to the 'cells' it will help balance this? also, in the main page I want to outline my top 2, or 3 projects. This is where i hope to display my ability to design and fabricate a 'stylish' site.

    http://www.rlemon.com/ <- webdesign.
    that is an example of a graphic site i've done. i never finished the site because i did not have the filler at the moment. for the past few months all i've been working on is simple scripts, projects, and online applications to use as filler. *the splash intro to that site was thrown together in minutes - not good - don't crit it*

    Basically, I agree with your comments above with some small exceptions.

    and finally, why I have chosen to open this simple design to critic:
    -> Personally, I like it. I'm a fan of simple, blocky, but at the same time somewhat techy-looking. I thought this design portrayed that, but i guess i was mistaken.

    again thankyou for the input and critic. any more comments would be appreciated.

    I never said it was ugly Its grey, I dont think its possible to achieve ugly with just grey Its dull, but not ugly.

    You dont have to be graphically intense to make a good looking site.

    ...argh gotta go - I'll write more when I get home from work.

    Ok, the colour of the navigation links has changed. also i've set the weight to 600 (bold).
    hopefully this helps pull them out for the user.

    If you have any suggestions on how to 'un-dull' the site *i like making up words* please share

    and thankyou so much for your comments.. i was having trouble getting people to critic this.

    there is a major problem with my uploading.....

    in the link i changed the colour, and that was visible on the site - however the change in the corresponding 'href' was not taken?

    how can parts of a file be updated and the other parts left alone? would using dreamweavers integrated site manager be messing me up?

    let me try uploading in FileZilla and see if i have the same problem.

    Edit:

    Ok, this is now fixed. i'm not sure what the problem was but when i closed DW and stopped my Subversion manager (which i'm not even using with this project) it worked.
