    Teaching Blog: Review

    http://www.toddseal.com/rodin/

    I'm more concerned with layout problems in different browsers and computers than with design issues. I'd like to hear what you have to say about design issues too, though.

    I've been gone from the forum for a while and this is just one of the things I've been working on. The site's gone through several revisions and lots of coding changes. So, what do you think? Where does it break? Does the lack of images hurt the site too much? Any other ideas?

    Thanks for your time.

    it appears identical enough on Mozilla and IE6 for me. Nothing but the usual spacing issures but nothing to break the layout.

    Not really sure on the Georgia being used throughout the page. With the font size the letters semmed cramped a little. Maybe a sans-serif font or a little font-spacing? for the headings it look snice but for the content text it doesn't suit my fancy.

    It is pretty anti-image isn't it? Not a bad thing given the content. It works fine enough for me.

    I guess I'm not really a fan of 100% fluid layouts. I have 1152xwhatever res and the text gets a tad long for my liking. I didn't expand any higher to see how long they got. I can imaging people running a larger screen size and the small text excerpts becoming 1 or 2 lines tall. to me that would bug me.

    color wise I like the comment parts but the home page, the pinkish hue...ehh.

    Thanks, harbinger.

    I added a bit of letter-spacing and adjusted the line-height of everything inside P tags (which is pretty much all entry content; just about everything else is in a list of header tag). I tried arial/sans-serif and I wasn't so hot on it, not that it was horrible or anything. Check again and see if that suits your sight a bit more. I'm liking it a bit more that way.

    I'm still playing with some graphics. Once I get something that I like, I'll update, but there won't be a whole lot of them when that happens. I'm just not seeing graphics on this site so much. Maybe...

    As for the 100% fluid design, at this point I'm not thinking that much of the audience for this site will be using giant monitors with the resolution pumped up high enough to matter much. My bigger concern is about people still set at 800x600. Good point, though, about those higher res viewers being a bit peeved for things that would otherwise be multiple lines only taking up one on their screen. I'll work on that in the background.

    A vote against the pinkish home page color, eh? I've an idea for it later, but for now I've just changed the border color for those odd numbered entries. Maybe the pink gives a bit of life to the colors on the front page...

    todd-

    the font spacing looks nicer to me that way. A little less clutter. Georgia has a way of cramming things. There are still a few leeter combos that do it but nothing major.

    its not so much i dont like the pink it's maybe just that the comments don't mirror it maybe. thare all the same color bg and no deffinition. Maybe it's more a continuity issue for me.

    on the 100% fluid thing... good point. even on here most users with huge res's dont maximize to view pages and i would assume that most of the users of your page would be 1020 maqx as it "might" be default on newer systems.

    all inall looks good.

    one thing I just saw that hits me. (i'm not really that picky just little things )
    the rollever heading links to the posts has an underline that sits right up top the bottom border. looks cramped. I guess I'mm all about space. Bad relationships in the past i guess Maybe a color change instead?

    its good to see teachers keeping up with up tech though. refreshing to me as a life long student returning yet again in january.

    p.s. just looked at your homoe page. Arcade Fire...good stuff

    I enjoyed Arcade Fire, yeah.

    Ok, I made a few changes to the site and I'd like some feedback on how the fades are working for you. Too much? Not enough? I want enough of them to be a kind of motif, but not so many that it's distracting. Let's see if anyone is thinking what I'm thinking.

    Cheers and thanks for the extra sets of eyes on this.

    Just glanced at the source and saw class="entry_odd" and class="entry_even". Wouldn't it make more sense to use class="entry odd" and class="entry even"? Then you could style .entry {}, .odd {}, and .even {} seperately.

    Design's not bad. I'd shift those gradients down a bit so they don't touch the entries' body text, and the horizontal menu items aren't vertically centered in their bar, but it looks good otherwise.

    It looks pretty much the same in FF and IE. The site is quite nice, but one thing I don't really like is how much gradients you have. It seems a little repetitive IMO.

    Other than that, looks much nicer than when I last saw it.

    Scooter: Repetitive in the sidebar and the main content area? I'm interested in how you see it as repetitive. Is it the repetition of the green and pink-ish on the main page? Or is it that there are gradients in the main area AND in the sidebar?

    Aaron: Good points. I like the idea of removing the underscore; that's a simple matter and does make a bit more sense. Moving the gradient down a bit is easy, too. I was thinking of moving the gradient to the top of the box and having it cover the H2 header of each entry. Either way, though, you're right about moving it down a bit. The other matter you mention, centering the menu items in the boxes vertically, I'm having trouble with that. Though this isn't the correct place for that issue technically, care to glance at the CSS and give me a few ideas about it? I know I'm missing some easy setting there, again. If you get a chance, great. If not, I'll post in the HTML/CSS forum.

    Thanks, folks.

    This seems to do the trick:
    Code:
    #menu li
    {
    display: inline;
    line-height: 1.6em; /* new bit */
    }
    Other than that I'm liking it, apart from a couple of things: Not sure about the Navy Blue text on the green in the header, and the gradients - not sure really, the transition from colour to transparent looks a little blunt to me.

    Gary

    Actually 1.8em looks a little more like centered

    Thanks for the line-height bit. 1.7em seems to be working for me. Good eye.

    A bit blunt? Are you referring to the sidebar gradients ("latest comments" and such) or the main content gradients? And do you mean that they move from too dark to too light, too quickly? Maybe if I lighten up the beginning shade of pink or green...

    I'm looking into changing the color on those top headers, though I may end up sticking with the blue. I tried something with it; have a look. Too bland??

    I just felt that you were over using the gradients as you have it in your "Search" "Latest Comments" and every post.
    Just my 2 cents

    I've removed the gradients from search and archive pages, leaving them for the main content on the home and Podcasts pages. I've also taken them out of the sidebar, but left them in the comments and similar posts lists for each entry. The gradients have also been adjusted a bit and are hopefully a little less jarring. Let's see what you think.
