    Cool Grand Review...

I would like a review of one of my sites. I'm a beginner web designer using Frontpage 2003 and Dreamweaver MX. I learned trial and error over the past 2 years. I don't know how to write code. As a matter a fact, I don't even know what you guys mean when you tell someone "There is some coding errors on the site to look into". I am a professional aerial stuntman of 15 years and operate a Action Sports tour. Please let me know what you guys think of the site layout, colors, navigation or whatever else comes to mind when you see it. I've built a smaller site into the main one at the "PST" button. Make sure to check it out and the forum. Thanks...Jim

This is the bit where I giggle.

This is the bit where you include a link so we can actually see the site.

I take no responsibility for the above nonsense.

Good job on your bit, Oracle

    Ok, down to business..
The following are my blunt opinions. I'm in a hurry and this is a critique, so I'm about to get critical. Take from it what you will, I'm just another opinion
Splash Page - Looks great, but lose it. It's totally pointless for two reasons:
    1) You want to feed your regular traffic (forum users) through the front page so as to keep them up date with current news on your home page.
2)The top link in the main site menu is to the forum.

Header - I like it. Problem: The buttons are smooth with soft shading, but the bar above them has harsh pixel edges and a shallow tonal range. This creates an uneasy contrast that appears to me as "That'll do" on your part.

BIG ONE - Usability rule #1: Never style any text element to immitate the appearance of a link if it is not one. Your headings for each article are not links, and unless they are going to become links to larger versions of the article then that's reeeaaallly gotta change.

The code's got issues, but you've already said that's being generated so there's no point me going into detail about it.

I honestly like the design - if I didn't, I wouldn't have just bothered writing this!

I take no responsibility for the above nonsense.

Thanks for the review and sorry I forgot the link before! I like your advice and will probably change most of what you brought up. When you guys talk about code issues what does that mean? I don't code but I would like to have an idea. Anyone else out there that can give my site a review? Thanks guys...Jim

    Go to:
    http://www.htmlhelp.org/tools/validator/

Paste your URL into the window there and you will see an outline of the errors. To correct them in your file, go down to the bottom of the frontpage program. Hit the little tab that says "HTML" to see and edit the coding for your page.

(The basics of HTML are not hard to learn
Here is a page with a list of tags with explanations for each:
    http://www.htmlhelp.com/reference/html40/olist.html

    You can also go to
    http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/index/elements.html
but sometimes it is very difficult to understand the explanations, even though I think that English is the first language of the people who put that together... )

I quite like your design as well. The only problem I foresee is that in higher resolutions, there will be very large white border on left and right because the width of the page is set in fixed pixels. (Of course, using relative widths could cause a whole new nightmare with the image at the top.)

One other thing: How about placing the photo images with the articles that they go with instead of putting them in a line across the top? Or possibly down the side below your menu. This will reduce that empty area on the left as one scrolls down the page.

(I love the link at the bottom of the page for those against swooping )
