Need your feedback - Whats right or wrong with my site

    Hi Everyone,

I recently finished building my website (www.mailbagmedia.com), and I would really appreciate your feedback on the following...

    1) Does the home page, and the how it works page do a good job of explaining what the service offers?

    2) Do you think the home page text and audio message will make people take action, which is sign up as a member, or is something missing?

    3) What do you think about the service being offered. Does you think it will appeal to a wide audience?

    4) What about the website design. Is the site appealing? What do you like, What do you not like?

Any feedback you can provide would be really appreciated, and I look forward to responding to your reviews, and your advice.

    Thanks,

    Robert

I skipped everything after seeing the html source of your page. Don't you know why using tables for layout is stupid?
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">
You need to have a valid and semantic markup, and the first thing to attain this is to have a valid DOCTYPE at the top. The one at your end is incomplete.

    Abduraooft you're a table elitist aren't you. A tabelist. An anti-tabelite!

Anyway... I'll comment on the design. To me there's nothing eye-catching about it-- looks like a standard template you'd find at freecsstemplatesgalore.com (only it's table design). This is a problem, because the website concept is actually great! But I had to _read_ almost the entire introduction paragraph before I got the picture.

Which brings me to my point-- PICTURES. They say a thousand words. You have a picture of a couple of speakers. Completely unrelated to the website's mission and what it actually does. And then-- you have a GREAT hook you should maximize on-- you are selling movies for $.40!!! That should be HUGE on the page! 40 cent DVDs! Splash that in 128px font across the top! You get my point? Your website design needs to *SELL* your idea better than it's doing right now.

And I hate to say it but that domain name is really weak. I realize finding decnet domain names these days is brutal but surely there is something better than that out there?

Anyway to summarize, I love the idea, but the layout of your website buries your idea in what looks like a free template you bummed off some 16 year-old kid back in 2003. (Which would make him 23 today so he's probably running Google's South American division)

    These are available:

    tradingmoviesandmore.com

    themovieswap.com

    ilovetradingmovies.com

    moviesnmusictrader.com

(avoid the word "media", people don't relate to it on a personal level)

That has to go in the book as one of the most divergent, wandering off course musing rambles that I've seen in yonks.

I had a similar experience, until I read the entire intro paragraph I wasn't sure what the website was about.

Closed. Never ever ever ever ever play audio when I haven't explicitly allowed you to. Ever. I'd love to comment further, but you drive users away with unwanted audio.

Edit: Okay, I revisited--but it didn't autoplay this time. I wonder why?

Haha... I was a little bit loops after my 3-hour bus ride into work this morning. Just had to free-form a bit

And some of us won't help you cause they jumped out of their seat when the audio played, quit quickly, and won't bother with it.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

Point taken about the use of graphics to describe more about what the site is about.

Using the automatic voice message was a tough choice, but it seems a lot of sites these days have the walk in talking characters so I thought I would give it a try. It only plays on the first visit to the site, and if you want to hear the message again you need to press the play button.

I guess i'll need to take it off autoplay and put a prompt on the page to show a voice description is available.

As far as the domain name goes it really does describe the service. Members trade media (dvd's, cd's, book's, video games) with each other, and they're delivered by the post office. So thats where the mailbag part comes in, and of course dvd's, cd's, book's and video games are all forms of media.

It's quite short, unique, easy to remember and brand-able I believe.

What about the text on the home page and the how it works page. Does it do a good job of describing what the service offers?

Thanks and I look forward to more feedback
