    Question review for total amateur?

    hey guys,

i'm building a page for one of my professors over the summer, and it would be great if you could have spare a min for a look. i don't really think it's very good....i've just been looking at code for the last semester, and this is the first real site i've done

it's on my webspace for the moment (some of the links are still dead)
    http://www.mtholyoke.edu/~syoussef/japanese/index.html

her main concern was to have a *very* easily maintainable site, so no frames, image maps or buttons. also, if the images look like a 5 yr. old produced them - that would be b/c i did them myself...

if anyone could spare the time to have a look, that would be great. thanks!
    luce

p.s. you probably haven't seen me here before, b/c i have a tendency to forget signing on, but the forums are great and very, very helpful! i learned a lot here

    meh?

*thwaps forehead* thanks justame, that was.....totally stupid of me....
i fixed the closing </td> and </tr> tag as you suggested, however that still didn't work.
so i fiddled around with notepad, and ended up with this:

    <td rowspan="3" valign="top" height="454" width="40" background="images/borders/left.jpg"> & n b s p </td>

this seems to work, but since i'm web illiterate, i have to ask this (sorry) : why?

i didn't have to do this in any previous designs, although admittedly the images were sliced differently...

so is this just b/c of the rowspan? it would be great, if someone could explain this to me

    thanks again

    Smile review for total amateur

    Hi Luce y

    Very nice site

Minor cosmetic point: In the menu bar, some links are capitalized (e.g. Travel) while others aren't (e.g. Courses) although they share the same heirarchy in the menu.

Looking at your contact site, you have the graphics linked via the computer directory, rather than the web directory

My guess regarding the image thing is that without any content at all, the cell is ignored. Not having seen the site in N'scape, I can't say for sure why you may have had an image off on its lonesome.

    Cheers

    cam

well, if i'm understanding the issue properly, then i'm guessing dreamweaver probably did it for you. table cells have a habit of collapsing in on themselves, and disappearing, if there's nothing in them. that's why the blank space is needed to make look right. and that's probably why the image was there before.

hope that makes sense/i understood you guys properly.

This is a Netscape thing, if there isn't any content in the cell, NS will not display the background image or bgcolor.

It is good practice to put in a spacer.gif (or invisable.gif) in the cells that do not have any content.

Otherwise, yep like the design. I just find the blue border thingies a bit heavy. As the page has a very clean look, the borders are the "odd man out" as they are quite thick.

    Good luck with the project

sorry i haven't replied in a while, but i've been kept busy by some shtuff....

thanks to all of you for taking the time, and for your comments; that was definitely helpful . the netscape and capitalization should (*should*) be fixed, and i personally agree with tonz (especially after some decent sleep), but my prof. doesn't seem too eager about changing it.

    so thanks again,
    luce

On an amusing sidenote: i looked the page over on a mac studio display today.....which was hilarious and pathetic at the same time, but since i know that about 90% of the ppl looking at the page will be using their 800x600 or 1024x768 res. i'm not too worried
