    Please critique this design

This is for a project I'm about to start coding. I'd like to finish up the design and make improvements to it before I start slicing it up.

    the design is here

    thanx

I like the layout of the design, but I think you should improve the quality of the images and buttons, or that may just be the format you uploaded the image as.

I cannot see the address very well, you should change this colour to be lighter. The same goes for the phone number.

The only other thing is, from my own point of view as a designer, I think that when you use gradients, they should be from colours that are closer together rather than black to white, go from dark grey to light grey.

Hope this helps, and if you need anyone to code the design I'm here to help

I have some general and specific comments, so bear with me

    Colors
You have selected a very strong purple to play with white, black, and red. There seem to be some harmonious colors and some clashing, for example the menu button color selection doesn't mesh well. I think you've chosen two too strong colors (the red and purple) and I might suggest cutting one all together (I'd drop the red). As was mentioned above, the gradient and contrast between text and background is sometimes distracting.

    Typography
There seems to be only one font, or two fonts that are almost the same. I would suggest making the logo with another font (make it separate, it needs to stand alone), and pull in a second font somehow. I'd personally use a sans-serif font for the body and menu, and a serif font for headings.

There are a few text/images, which have shadows or glows. I don't know if they fit quite right, for example the 'Check our inventory' or 'Parts and Services'. I have nothing against them, just feel they could be worked to fit better.

    Layout
Its a choice, but I see no reason why it is narrow. Pick a width, as it looks like your design isn't intended to be fluid, but perhaps give it a little more room horizontally. It seems a little squished, especially towards the bottom. Think about the header more, and give it a little more of a role in the design. Look at the frontpage of a newspaper, sure there is the Newspaper name big, but it also accomplishes many other things like giving little tidbits of information and other visual clues or invitations to continue. Think how you can use that space to grab attention rather than just to show the logo and a photo.

The page also just ends, and while footers are not required, they can help close a page and provide extra help like little menus and so forth. You might consider that as an additional feature.

    Images

There are a few images which are doing double duty, and its pulling away from the experience. An image should either be a photo/ad type, which it should then stand on its own, or it should be part of the layout. In this case you have a few photos as backgrounds, which fight against the text. Use them together, but not on top of each other.

Those are the things that stand out at the moment, good luck!

hmm, I made revisions but... well I'll wait for comments

    the revised design is here

I intend this design to be fluid. What you'll see is the page fully collapsed to 800px.

The "home" button is styled for the current page and will not be clickable
the "sales"button, the "New Bikes" link and the "get directions" are all hover styles.

comments and critiques are welcome, laughter is not constructive

I think you should get rid of the bezels. The site looks fine without them, and they're a largely deprecated design technique. Maybe use a gradient, like you have in your header, instead? Featured Bike also shouldn't have a drop shadow, 'cause it looks odd...
