    MissingStudios Site Review

Hello! I was wondering if you could review this site for a friend of mine:

    http://www.missingstudios.com/

    Moodle.

    Design:
    - I think the menu popups are a little too big and too rounded for their purpose.
    - Some might think that you overuse the rounded corners

    Technical:
    - Doesn't validate
    - (good) Doesn't use tables for layout.

Overall, I have very few criticisms. Everything works, the content is well-displayed and organized, and the design is neat and elegant.

I'm guessing you aren't worried about IE6 users? Your shadows on your background images don't work as IE6 doesn't support transparent pngs.

    - It would take forever to load on slower connection, your whole page together is quite large.
    - Please don't try to imitate FF bars at the top, you'll just end up confusing people.
    - Drop down menu just doesn't flow, also some of the main menu items aren't clickable (like community) which is a problem for non-JS visitors.
    - The outer borders of the page seems a bit overkill. It looks good, but it also looks a bit awkward in my mind.
    - Site is full of content that I imagine visitors would like.
    - What about pulling together for member accounts?
    - I have no idea what Missing Studios is supposed to mean or stand for...maybe there is a good reason for calling the site this, but is it a good title?

It seems like there are a few people here who really like the Sims. What is it about the game that everyone likes? I've never played...

Really? Because I thought it was the same person over and over again, pretty essentially.
My sweetheart loves it, probably because she can toy around with what people do and ended up making my sim having an affair with my friend. Um. She's twisted.

I agree, don't try an imitate an application or OS. The first time I saw it I immediately thought it was a typical spam/virus site, because the trend tends to be using system dialogs to give the users a sense of trust. Anyway, drop it, stick it in the sidebar, as its importance is quite low.

Thanks for you input I guess.... I've adapted the site a little, and fully understand what you are saying.

Info Bar: Removed - It was only temporary anyway, as the site had only just re-opened.
Main Menu: Made a little more JavaScript friendly for those who have it disabled, and smaller.
Rounded Corners - Staying - It's staying to suit it's overall theme of 'The Sims'.
Transparent PNG - Not much I can do about this. gif is too low quality and only accepts full transparency, and other format's don't support transparency, and therefore won't look right against the background and over the site's content.

    PNG Fix: http://www.twinhelix.com/css/iepngfix/

Also when clicking on things sometimes it brings up a directory listing. In that dir listing I am able to find files like your install.php file. You should probably remove that, and probably the DIR listing too.

I'm not sure where you're finding install.php, as I'm confident there isn't one on the server as I made the site from scratch. And can you tell me more about how often you can see the file listings?

I'll look into this PNG fix now.

OK, I've installed the transparent PNG script for IE 6. If someone has IE6, can you please test it out?

http://tredosoft.com/Multiple_IE Install this and see for yourself, since there are a few other things that seem to go awry.

JonnyT...is this another alias for Moodle, BabyJack, Wifee? If so, use the same name and stop pretending to be someone else.

I believe JonnyT is the friend that Moodle was referring to. I wonder if a mod could check the IPs of Moodle, BabyJack, and JonnyT against eachother. I still think that its entirely possible that 3 people are running Sims fansites, but its quite a coincidence.

As for the install.php and such:

http://www.missingstudios.com/search/admin/install.php. Accessing it doesn't do much, although it does tell me the names of all the tables you use, so you should go a head and delete it.

Other things which perhaps should be protected/deleted:
http://www.missingstudios.com/search/sql/tables.sql as well as everything in the http://www.missingstudios.com/search/sql/ folder - Tells me everything about your tables and fields.

I can't remember which link I clicked on, and now I can't seem to find it, but I did click on a link and it brought me to the page. Admittedly, knowing the tables and fields in the database really isn't that useful, unless I can hack into the database, and at that point it doesn't matter anyway. Still, you should probably block/delete them.

Offtopic: I like your 404 error page

I'm also not sure about the legality of using the same logo (it looks almost identical)? At least without making sure its clearly noted?

The IP of me and BabyJack will be the same as we registered on the school network. Jonny's will be different as he does not go to my school.

I would, but the problem is I'm using Vista, and that site states that it will not work with Vista. If you see otherwise, please tell me

EDIT: No, I'm neither BabyJack or Moodle.. He's an online friend of mine who also runs a Sims 2 Fansite
