Post What's Wrong with my Site?

    http://arctic.ithium.net/xtreme

I'd like to get your opinion on the general feel of the site; colors, navigation, ad placement, images, etc. What impresses you or annoys you on the site? What would you add, remove or change?

    Thanks!

Everything seems too crowded. Maybe it you didn't fit in all that information in one page.

Thank you all for your help!

Is the crowding and unorganized look come from all the stuff on the right side of the page? I got the page to fit in 1024×768, but that really makes things look packed together. I did this originally because someone before mentioned there being too much whitespace on 1280×1024.

I just temporarily removed the stuff on the right side - look any better?

In general the site looks really dated, so I'm immediately put off.

Having Google ads cheapens the site too, and takes eyes away from the main point which is to presumably sell scooters, and which you'd also presumably make a lot more money doing...

And also, that animate favicon... so cheesey, and really nothing to do with the site.

    Awe. LOL, Thanks!

Can you show me a modern looking (non-dated) site as a possible example? I'm not sure what you see.

The google ads actually improved my sales! I see that people are looking for the best prices and will click the ads of my competitors, then they find out I usually have the best price and come back for the sale. Almost like Progressive auto insurance - they'll show you the prices of other companies to prove they're lowest.

The animated American flag; too patriotic? Should I even use a favicon?

Yeah definately... but try and make it something to do with your site, or brand something that people will come to associate with your site.

I think it's the preponderence of blue, the solid block colours and your logo font choice that contribute to the dated look most, and probably the crowdedness. Adding more white space, some more colour, and either gradient or fine textured backgrounds, plus updating your logo, would go a long way towards fixing this.

Examples of modern looking sites? Hmm... Well the obvious ones that come to mind are http://www.flickr.com/ and http://digg.com/ (colours, white space).

For more in your vertical, I just found http://www.kymco.co.uk/, http://www.yamaha-motor.co.uk/products/scooters/

    Interesting about the Google ads...

theres too many links in your navigation. For example you have a header "manuals" or something like that, and then you have an individual link to every manual available. you should have the headers leading to a page which then has the links listed, so that your navigation is easier to use and understand.

    Thanks guys,

For a start, I've redone the menu system. At the moment it's working under JS with no fallback for non-JS users (which I may or may not set up). How does the menu look now?

I'm also working on a new site design so that will change as well.
